Roots International was founded September of 2012 by Scott Montgomery prior to moving from the United States to Africa.  You can read more about Scott Montgomery here.  Roots International is developing programs to increase the self-reliance and food security of South Sudan and its people. It was said by Albert Schweitzer that, “Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.” therefore our projects are designed so that others can easily replicate our successes. Roots International’s current projects include:

Yei Demonstration Farm

Chrisco Fellowship of Churches – Yei has agreed to host a demonstration farm on its approx. eight acre grounds in Sopiri area of Yei, South Sudan. This will serve as a test site for many underutilized fruits and vegetables and/or alternative growing methods. Successful implementations of crops will be shared with the public through training and literature beginning late 2014.

Current/Year 1 Crop trials:

Squash: zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkin
Melon: watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon
Root Vegetables: beet, red potato, gold potato, radish
Beans: garbanzo beans, green peas, snap beans, red kidney beans, pinto beans, soy beans
Greens: kale, green lettuce, various greens, cabbage, spinach
Herbs: basil, chives, powdered moringa, cilantro, and others
Other Vegetable: sweet corn, sweet peppers, heirloom tomato, sunflower
Fruit Trees: starfruit, loquat, sugar apple, cashew

Mapoko Agriculture project

Successful crop trials within the demonstration farm will then proceed to a more suitable location for seed production. This program will include a seed store using locally saved seeds to adequately serve the Yei area. Other large projects which can benefit the community will also be occurring at a large land located in the village of Mapoko, South Sudan.

Ox Plow program

Currently there are two oxen being used to prepare land for the demonstration farm and the Mapoko project. During 2014 a program will be developed for cultivating locals’ farm land. In the future more ox will be trained for this work to allow farmers to utilize more of their land. This profitable activity will help recover costs of the demonstration farm.
